There are many, many more of us than them! Remember that. It might sometimes feel like the racists outnumber us, but they absolutely do not!
A group from Gloucestershire Solidarity Network travelled up to Birmingham on Sunday for a unity march and rally organised by the TUC, Stand Up To Racism and other groups. And we had a great day out!
On the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, where major events were taking place in London, Birmingham also very clearly showed that it is a proudly anti-fascist city! ❤️ ✊
So many people came out to attend the unity march to reject racism and fascism in Birmingham – one of the most diverse cities in our country. It was a joy to be amongst the thousands of people celebrating their beautiful differences. There were various anti-racist and anti-fascist blocks, there was a climate change block, a community block, a Palestine block, Women Against The Far Right, multiple trade unions, large numbers of students and many other community groups from right across the West Midlands.
The march snaked through the city centre, with people joining us all the time and shoppers cheering and clapping as we passed.
In Victoria Square at the end of the march, there were moving speeches and there was music and drumming and singing and joy. It was good for the soul and good for the spirits. Birmingham clearly said NO to racism. NO to fascism. NO to scapegoating.
There had been rumours before the event that a network of hardened neo-Nazis and white supremacists were planning to try to disrupt the rally. On the day though, they obviously thought better of trying to mess with Brummies, and stayed well away.
In the end there were just a pitiful number of pathetic looking far right losers trying to mount a counter protest in one corner of Victoria Square. They looked pretty silly to be honest, and the West Midlands Police kept them well away from the joyful unity rally! The few racists who had turned up, slunk away with their tails between their legs after a while, having been drowned out by the chants of “There are many, many more of us than you” from the anti-racists!
So, all in all, well done Birmingham! ❤️
It was great for a few of us to be there to represent the Gloucestershire Solidarity Network!
